Telefónica introduces first 200G connection for Data Roaming to meet customer’s traffic needs

Wholesale 18 September 2018

Madrid, September 18 2018.- Telefónica’s wholesale business unit, Telefónica International Wholesale Services (TIWS), has announced that its first 200 Gigabit Ethernet redundant Data Roaming interconnection is now ready for service. This is a new milestone in the deployment of traffic capacity for its customers.

June 2018 marked the first anniversary of the implementation of the EU regulation that generalized Roam Like at Home (RLAH) in Europe. Together with the ongoing adoption of 4G technology, RLAH has led to significant traffic growth, even beyond the traditional summer peak, and one year on, the Data Roaming traffic of European Union operators has tripled year-on-year.

In August 2018, TIWS launched its first 200 Gigabit Ethernet interconnection with one of its most traffic-intensive customers, Telefónica España. As one of the top three most important tourist destinations in the world, Spain experiences particularly high traffic volumes during peak months. The new redundant interconnection is based on the link aggregation (LAG) of 100 Gigabit Ethernet interconnections and with this increase in network access, paired with upgrades in its backbone, TIWS is confident it will satisfy the needs of Telefónica España and its Roaming partners for the coming years, delivering an excellent end user experience.

Juan Carlos Bernal, CEO Telefónica’s International Wholesale Business explains: “IPX providers, like Telefónica, have a key role to play to provide mobile operators with the interconnection options they need to meet customer connectivity and experience expectations. We are committed to delivering a high quality experience, not just for our operator customers but also for their customers.”
Ignacio de los Mozos Cuadrado, Director Wholesale Business, Telefónica España added: “With the increase in traffic that we expect in the future, it is important that we prepare our network to handle it, and we are confident that this 200G interconnection will ensure our customers receive the service that they demand.”
